Ethereal Space Awarded NOAA SBEM Task Order 1

The newly secured task order spans a period of 24 months and carries a total contract value of approximately $27.4 million. Under the terms of the agreement, Ethereal Space will begin initial data deliveries to the federal agency starting December 1, 2026. This rapid timeline underscores the operational readiness of Ethereal Space’s proprietary technology and highlights NOAA’s ongoing strategic initiative to leverage commercial sector innovations to enhance its continuous monitoring of Earth and space environments.

As part of the broad scope of the Space-Based Environmental Monitoring program, Ethereal Space will provide a steady stream of commercial space-based environmental observations designed to directly support NOAA’s day-to-day operational forecasting and scientific missions. The company’s comprehensive technical capabilities cover a diverse array of critical atmospheric and space weather phenomena. Specifically, Ethereal Space will deliver high-fidelity Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation data, which is essential for detailed atmospheric and ionospheric observations. In addition, the company will supply critical thermospheric neutral-density measurements alongside advanced multispectral visible and infrared imagery to capture comprehensive physical states of the upper atmosphere and surface indicators.

The integration of these specialized data streams is expected to significantly augment NOAA’s existing meteorological, climatological, and space weather forecasting capabilities. By tapping into commercial architectures, the federal agency can expand its spatial and temporal coverage, ensuring that meteorologists, climatologists, and researchers have access to robust, high-resolution information essential for tracking severe weather, monitoring ionospheric disturbances, and understanding complex atmospheric dynamics.

Reflecting on the significance of the federal contract, Shawn Cochran, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Ethereal Space, emphasized the strategic evolution that the award represents for the aerospace firm.

"This award represents an important transition for Ethereal Space from building and demonstrating new observing capabilities to delivering operational environmental data at scale," said Cochran. "We are proud to support NOAA’s mission and to contribute commercial observations that improve our understanding of the atmosphere, ionosphere, and space environment."

The achievement comes as Ethereal Space continues to actively deploy a rapidly growing constellation of small satellites and specialized orbital sensors. This infrastructure has been meticulously engineered to transform complex space-based observations into actionable environmental intelligence. By streamlining the path from raw orbital telemetry to practical downstream utility, the company serves a diverse spectrum of government, commercial, and scientific users who rely on timely and accurate data to navigate environmental risks and operational challenges.

The broader ProTech 2.0 framework represents NOAA’s continued commitment to fostering a robust commercial marketplace for environmental data. Programs like Space-Based Environmental Monitoring allow federal agencies to procure vital data products as a service, driving cost efficiencies, encouraging rapid technological iteration, and benefiting from the rapid pace of commercial aerospace innovation. For Ethereal Space, securing Task Order 1 establishes a firm operational baseline within federal procurement channels, positioning the company as a trusted government partner in the delivery of next-generation environmental intelligence.

Founded with a clear focus on the future of Earth and space observation, Ethereal Space develops and operates sophisticated commercial satellite systems, advanced environmental sensors, and specialized data products. The company’s core mission centers on providing timely, affordable observations and converting those precise physical measurements into actionable environmental intelligence that helps society better comprehend and respond to changing atmospheric and space weather conditions. As the December 2026 delivery date approaches, teams at Ethereal Space are ramping up preparations to ensure seamless integration and continuous data flow into NOAA’s operational architecture.
