Crypto Exchange MNX Challenges Industry Giants with New Pre-IPO Futures for AI Titans

A fresh wave of financial innovation is washing over the cryptocurrency sector as a new exchange, MNX, officially launches its platform. Founded by former executives from the prediction market Manifold, MNX is positioning itself as a direct challenger to established crypto exchanges like OKX and Bitget. The platform, which went live this Tuesday, aims to carve out a specialized niche by allowing investors to speculate on the future valuations of some of the world’s most prominent private artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, and Moonshot.

The launch of MNX marks a significant escalation in the race to provide retail and institutional traders with exposure to the AI boom. While the broader market has been captivated by the massive capital inflows into AI, traditional financial infrastructure has struggled to keep pace, leaving many investors without a mechanism to bet on the growth of these private technology giants before they reach the public markets. MNX, which successfully raised $6.4 million in a June funding round led by Village Global, is built on the MegaETH blockchain, a choice of infrastructure designed to support the high-frequency nature of derivatives trading.

A New Mechanism for AI Speculation

The entry of MNX into the market is not merely a replication of existing offerings. While competitors like OKX and Bitget have already paved the way by introducing pre-IPO trading instruments, MNX is introducing a distinct structural approach. The primary point of differentiation lies in the nature of its contracts. Whereas Bitget utilizes perpetual futures—a staple of the crypto industry that offers no expiration date—MNX has opted for a fixed-term contract model. These contracts are set to expire at the end of 2027 and, crucially, do not carry the recurring funding fees that typically characterize perpetual futures.

This distinction is significant for long-term investors. By removing the daily or periodic funding rate payments, MNX hopes to appeal to market participants who are looking for a more predictable, long-term exposure to the AI sector. OKX, which has also been aggressive in this space, offers its own variation of contracts that lack expiration dates but rely on a different internal funding mechanism. For MNX, the move is a strategic bet that traders are seeking a cleaner, more intuitive way to hold positions on private AI firms without the cost drag associated with perpetual products.

Max Killberg, an investor at Village Global, views the current landscape as one of the most significant investment cycles in modern history. "AI is driving one of the largest investment cycles in history, despite the financial infrastructure around it remaining quite underdeveloped," Killberg noted. According to him, the firm’s investment in MNX was predicated on the belief that there is a genuine market demand for robust financial products tailored specifically to the AI economy, rather than simply creating another generic prediction market.

Addressing the Illiquidity Problem

The difficulty of pricing private companies remains a persistent hurdle for investors. Stephen Gruggett, a co-founder of Manifold Markets, argues that the current industry reliance on perpetual futures for private equity bets is fundamentally flawed. Because the shares of companies like OpenAI or Anthropic trade so infrequently in secondary markets, the price data available to traders is often "stale," meaning it does not reflect the current reality of the company’s value.

"OpenAI, Anthropic secondaries are illiquid and hard to price," Gruggett explained in an interview with CoinDesk. "A perp based on an illiquid, stale price is worse than meaningless: it doesn’t behave the way investors expect; it’s easy to manipulate; and it may have a very high and unpredictable funding rate."

By shifting to a fixed-term contract model, MNX aims to mitigate some of these risks. Furthermore, the platform empowers traders by allowing them to use up to three times their available funds as leverage. While this significantly amplifies the potential for profit, it simultaneously increases the risk of loss, a reality that the exchange is highlighting as it seeks to attract a sophisticated user base.

The Mechanism of Price Discovery

One of the most unique aspects of the MNX platform is its approach to price discovery. Unlike traditional brokerage platforms that might pull data from a consolidated external feed, prices on MNX are determined primarily by internal trading activity. This "internalized" discovery process ensures that the market on the exchange reflects the sentiment and conviction of the participants active on the platform itself.

However, this raises the question of how these contracts will ultimately settle. MNX has outlined a hierarchy for determining the final settlement price of its contracts. If a company remains private when its contract expires, the exchange will look to publicly available valuation data, such as recent funding rounds, institutional investment fund disclosures, or data from private secondary markets. In scenarios where such data is unavailable or inconclusive, MNX retains the right to determine the settlement price independently, subject to a publicly documented review process.

This governance structure introduces a layer of counterparty risk that investors must weigh carefully. Because the settlement price may deviate from the price at which shares might eventually change hands in an actual private transaction, users are essentially betting on the exchange’s internal price discovery and its ability to accurately reflect market value through its settlement methodology.

Expanding the AI Frontier

Although MNX currently restricts access to its platform for U.S. customers due to regulatory considerations, co-founder Stephen Gruggett has indicated that obtaining the necessary licenses to expand into the American market is a long-term goal for the company. The regulatory environment surrounding crypto-based derivatives remains complex, and the exchange will need to navigate these hurdles carefully as it matures.

Looking beyond the high-profile names like OpenAI and Anthropic, MNX has set its sights on a much broader horizon. The leadership team envisions a platform that provides market-based insights into the wider AI economy. This could eventually include markets tied to specific metrics of the AI industry, such as company revenue growth, total employment figures, housing trends in tech hubs, the stability and health of the AI supply chain, and total global computing capacity.

The broader economic context supports the notion that the AI sector is becoming an all-consuming force for capital. Recent data from Bitcoin Suisse’s "Crypto Wealth Management Report 2026" highlights that the largest U.S. hyperscalers are projected to spend at least $800 billion this year, with that figure expected to exceed $1 trillion in the coming year. As AI becomes a "huge sponge" for investment capital, the concentration of this wealth in a small handful of tech giants has led to a dilemma for portfolio managers who are looking for ways to hedge their exposure or find alternative entry points.

As MNX begins its operations, the industry will be watching closely to see if its fixed-term contract model can effectively solve the liquidity and pricing issues that have plagued earlier attempts at pre-IPO trading. By providing a dedicated venue for this speculative activity, MNX is attempting to professionalize a niche that has long been fragmented and opaque. Whether or not the platform can scale its user base and navigate the complex regulatory landscape will be the defining challenge for the team in the months and years ahead. For now, however, the exchange represents a bold attempt to bring the volatility and excitement of the AI investment cycle into a structure that feels more aligned with the needs of modern, digitally-native traders.
