Mediacom hires Throckmorton as group VP of mobile strategy

Throckmorton is a highly experienced telecommunications executive whose career spans facilities-based mobile carriers and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), with leadership experience in product management, business development, pricing and packaging, and operations. His extensive background in the telecommunications sector positions him uniquely to steer Mediacom through its next phases of growth and strategic development within the highly competitive mobile marketplace.

Throckmorton began his telecommunications career in 2000 with Sprint Corporation in Overland Park, Kansas, where he participated in the company’s management development program and led product teams in both the consumer and business segments. During his formative years at Sprint, he gained foundational insights into large-scale network operations, customer segmentation, and the shifting dynamics of the wireless communications industry at the turn of the century. This early period of his career allowed him to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of how to manage and scale product offerings across diverse market segments, preparing him for the broader leadership roles that would follow.

He later led the product organization at MetroPCS in Richardson, Texas, during a period of rapid subscriber growth that culminated in the company’s acquisition by T-Mobile. At MetroPCS, Throckmorton played a pivotal role in shaping product strategies that appealed to cost-conscious consumers seeking reliable wireless alternatives. His leadership during this high-growth phase demonstrated his ability to navigate complex competitive landscapes, optimize pricing and packaging structures, and drive operational efficiency while maintaining exceptional customer acquisition rates. The success of MetroPCS during his tenure made the company an attractive acquisition target, ultimately leading to its integration into T-Mobile and further solidifying Throckmorton’s reputation as a transformative product leader in the telecommunications sector.

Building upon his extensive experience with facilities-based carriers, Throckmorton joined Charter Communications in 2015 as one of its first mobile product employees. As part of Charter’s mobile leadership team, Throckmorton helped build and grow Spectrum Mobile from its launch to more than 10 million subscriber lines, contributing to the development and execution of the company’s mobile strategy, products, and operations. His decade-long tenure at Charter placed him at the forefront of the cable-mobile convergence trend, where traditional broadband providers successfully bundled wireless services to reduce churn, enhance household value propositions, and capture significant shares of the mobile market. By helping scale Spectrum Mobile past the momentous milestone of 10 million subscriber lines, Throckmorton proved his capability to guide a major mobile initiative from its infancy into a massive, commercially successful enterprise.

The appointment comes at a crucial juncture for Mediacom Communications as the company seeks to further strengthen its position in the evolving telecommunications landscape. As consumer demands shift toward bundled connectivity solutions that seamlessly integrate home broadband and mobile services, leadership with a proven track record in scaling mobile MVNO operations and crafting compelling product portfolios becomes increasingly valuable. Throckmorton’s wealth of experience across both traditional mobile network operators and cable-led mobile ventures aligns seamlessly with Mediacom’s long-term strategic objectives for its mobile business division.

Industry analysts note that the integration of mobile services into regional cable and broadband portfolios has become a primary driver of customer retention and average revenue per user across the telecommunications industry. With executives like Throckmorton leading the charge, companies are better equipped to navigate the intricate operational, technical, and marketing challenges inherent in delivering competitive wireless services. His expertise in product management, business development, pricing and packaging, and operations will be instrumental as Mediacom continues to refine its mobile offerings and expand its market reach.
